Flies may be tiny but they can move quickly, flying at up to 5 miles per hour, which is quite fast when you consider the average human walks roughly 3 miles per hour! Did you know that the buzzing sound you hear when a fly is flying around your head is actually the sound of the fly’s wings beating 20 thousand times per minute? This rapid flapping of wings creates a steady humming sound as the fly moves. With four thousand lenses in each giant bug eye, flies have natural wide-angle vision. Houseflies don’t bite or sting, though their cousins such as horse flies or black flies can leave painful stings similar to bees or wasps.
